In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare ye the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him." John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. Matthew 3: 1-6 |
| And this was John's message:
"After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not
worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit." At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by
John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven open and the
Spirit descending on him in the form of a dove. And a loud voice came from heaven: saying,
"You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Mark 1: 7-11 |
